The 5 Best Excuses For Not Sending Holiday Cards

It's Christmas card time of year! Its that stressful, gotta-get-it-done period where you're not sure if writing that letter comes before wrapping presents and making sugar cookies, or after. Well fear not! I've got the only list you need and it's going to help you get out of the stress of writing, designing, sending, printing, addressing, and stamping the dreaded Christmas card.

1) "I've decided I care about the environment. I don't want to waste paper."

It's true right? The 2.65 billion Christmas cards sold each year in the U.S. could fill a football field 10 stories high. If we each sent one card less, we’d save 50,000 cubic yards of paper. Pass that on to your friends and family!

2) "I'm going digital."

Although sales of cards from popular greeting card companies have remained pretty stable, digital seems to be the way a lot of people are headed this year. This articled titled "Is 2014 the year the Christmas card died" proved to be a good read and validates my point a little further. On both sides.

3) "They're not done yet."  Otherwise known as "I'm working on them."

You're totally working on it. At least in your head. Well I am at least. Ha.

4) "I ordered them from *insert popular printing company name here* and they aren't here yet."

This is totally a legit excuse especially if you live in Germany. I've read from peoples pages that it has taken between 6 weeks and two months for their cards/prints to arrive. Eek. If you live in the United States, then this reason still works for you. You can add in a "The printing company messed up my card." or "The company lost my cards."

5) "I didn't have your address."

You conveniently lost your address book. The dog ate it. Your baby threw it in the toilet. It got lost in the move. Your phone "lost it's contacts". Therefore, you have NO addresses and NO way to get a hold of people in time. Fortunately, there's an excuse/reason you can use to fix this one. See #6.

And as a bonus

6) "I'll send you one next year!"

  1. Christmas cards are actually a tradition I condone, heres why;
In a world that is so vast it's easy to feel alone and the digital world doesn't fill the gap, (I actually think it makes it bigger) but that's a different rant. So when I take all the time to make, address, stamp and send a card I think this person is definitely worth one stamp and the 13 cents it cost me to print. and I think of how this card could be someones ray of sunshine. I know I always feel happy when people remember me. especially if they take the time to actually hand write something I think WOW I must be somewhat important to them for that effort to be made. Plus I don't do Facebook and my blog is private (like anyone really read it anyway). SO I figure it's a good way to update people that we had a baby, or moved or are just living our lives.
But aside from my reasons to send out cards, I opted for your excuse #5 "I'll send one next year", because frankly I just sent out some birth announcements and should have been smart enough to make it a christmas one too but alas life with a new born and 2 other kids I give myself a break, and still hope that people will remember me without my card first.

    1. I agree! I totally love Christmas cards. Im hoping I get to send them next year. This year was hard so i had to have some reasons to justify my non sending. As if my broken ankle isn't good enough. Haha. Speaking of which, id love to be on your list and id like to include you in mine! :)

  2. I've been sending cards probably since 2008. People love mail and it's nice to get anything that's not a bill.

I find #2 and that article interesting. I sent more cards than ever this year (I guess I say that every year), but we also received significantly more cards this year than we have in years past. I commented this to a cousin who said it was the same for her. I guess it's not dead yet.

    1. Yeah the second article surprised me too! I love love love getting mail. Especially since we live so far away from friends and family. :) I think the increase is partly due to the availability of so many different ways to make it happen. Pinterest and Costco and Snapfish and Wal Greens etc... and all for cheap!
